ESPN Reports that: Plaxico Burress (New York Giants Wide Receiver) is facing two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon for carrying a loaded .40-caliber Glock semiautomatic pistol in a New York nightclub. Although Burress apparently had a permit to carry such a weapon in Florida, the expired licence did not automatically apply in New York, and if convicted on the 31st March, Burress could potentially face a mandatory minimum of 3 ½ years in prison.
The incident happened while Burress was partying the night away at the Latin Quarter (a nightclub and restaurant in the Radisson Lexington Hotel in Manhatten). Apparently, the unholstered gun was tucked into the waistband of his sweatpants when it slipped. Burrell is alleged to have grabbed for it, accidentally hitting the trigger in the process which resulted in Burrell shooting himself in the right thigh! Luckily, no other person was injured. The Giants subsequently suspended Burress for the final four games of the season, costing the player an estimated $2 million in income, though the NFL players’ union has filed two grievances and this has now gone to arbitration.
The Associated Press also report that, “since Burress joined the NFL in 2000, he has been sued at least nine times by people who said he failed to pay a debt, damaged their car or didn’t pay his taxes. In addition to fines for reckless driving, noise and public intoxication, and speeding”
