If you’re good enough, you’re old enough….

Twelve-year-old Korean-Australian pair Oh Su-hyun and Chi Young-min became the youngest players to compete in the Australian Open. Surprisingly though, neither of the girls are the youngest tournament golfers ever. Michelle Wie, was 10 years old when she qualified for the US Amateur Public Links Championship in 2000, while Ariya Jutanukarn, was 11 years 11 months and 2 days when she competed on the LPGA tour in 2007.

Both Oh and Chi earned the right to play this week by topping the official qualifying tournament at nearby Kingswood Golf Club on Monday. Although Oh started her Open campaign with a first-round six-over-par 79 on Thursday, she shot 81 on Friday to leave her missing the cut at 14-over 160.

Asked about her debut in the tournament Oh said: “I was really nervous when I started and really nervous when I finished. I enjoyed it, but I did not play good golf. I was one over after nine holes then I had three bogeys in a row.”

Oh revealed she had difficulty explaining her absence from her Melbourne school this week. “My sister tried to tell the (class) co-ordinator,” Oh said. “She said ‘what age group is that in?’ She could not think that I was playing in the Australian Open.”

Defending champion Webb, 34, added: “We’re seeing this more and more. Girls mature physically a lot sooner. It’s more likely that a 12-year-old (girl) is playing with grown women than guys, who mature much later.”
