British girl in coma after crashing sledge

January 27, 2009

A 24 yr-old British girl from London has been put into an induced coma after she suffered massive head injuries when the inner tube she was using as a sledge crashed into a tree in Austria.

Vienna police spokeswoman Michaela Raz said: “The incident is currently regarded as an accident by us. Those sledging tyres are hard to steer and to keep under control, especially when going at high speed. We assume that this is simply the reason the accident occurred.”

Austria is about to introduce legislation to make safety helmets mandatory for some mountain users. Ambulance surgeon Christian Kaulfersch of Schladming hospital said: “Crashes at 30mph are like a fall straight onto concrete from the second floor.”
